Demands of Labour Market and Integration of Migrants:
problematic areas
“To me integration means nothing, by all means, absolutely
nothing.”
Presenter: Dóra Dezs, PRIMTS researcher, presents third-country
nationals’ views and interpretations on “integration”
Many migrants from third countries are recruited to the EU for unskilled labour. They
contribute to the growth of the EU economy by filling in positions that are unattractive to
the “native” workforce. Current integration policies declare integration as a two-way
process that should equalize migrants’ opportunities with those of the “nationals”.
However, these policies often remain at the descriptive level, lacking mechanisms that
would enable and accelerate integration. With the purpose to explore meanings and
practices of integration measurements, the PRIMTS project involved third-country
nationals as partners in communication.
“Hidden migrant careers and formal care in Hungary”
Presenter: Zsuzsa Széman: Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Institute of
Sociology
The majority of the ageing societies are still not able to handle the complex problem of
lack of specific labour forces, including eldercare. The changed demographic structure,
the higher involvement of women in the labour market, the raised retirement age and the
resulting late exit of women began to reduce one of the most important sources of care,
the family eldercare provided by women. One response of families to the resulting big
gaps was to employ migrants. Migrant care workers are on the interface of formal and
informal care, professional and family tasks, housework and care work, being integrated
in the domestic sector under the control of family expenses but outside of professional
protocols.
We invite participants on the 16th March, CEU, Nador 9, Gellner room, 17:30
to share their vision on integration issues.
